Here we are now to that third worker. Interestingly, it was he who had only one talent who did nothing, and he had the easiest role. Perfect organization does not suit him. Expectations were the lowest from him, the pressure was the weakest, the possibility of making a mistake in creation was insignificant… But he sought security at work without the possibility of falling.
What kind of worker was he really? Apparently, we would say today a very ordinary worker, one who claims to suffer injustice in society and who blames others for his problems, has a low salary, low abilities, considers himself modest and ordinary… But still, he is received the talent to create something new.
This worker was doing his job as before, nothing new was created in the job, nothing new happened in his story. Everything remained the same as before, regardless of the opportunity to do something new, better than before. Personal initiative, creativity and innovation were not a choice for him, his choice is for others to create, and he wants a work environment in which he can do some given job, always in the same way and without change.
So, according to the “always everything is the same” and “you can’t pay him as little as he can work a little”, without realization, just doing it. Unfortunately, this worker had the opportunity to create and did not take that opportunity. How does he justify himself when the master asked for an account of creation? He said to his master, “I knew you. You are a strict man… “So, he knows his master well and emphasizes strictness!
Firmness in decision-making and steadfastness is the virtue of great leaders. The first two workers did not tell the master that he was strict, but this one is and he is telling the truth, so his further justification testifies against his misdeed. The master is obviously known as a man of great order and great entrepreneurial and managerial abilities because “harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter…” so the servant still praises the employer for these abilities and acknowledges the master’s excellent management skills.
Now this worker defends himself with self-pity: “so out of fear I went off…” and by manipulation he wants to present himself as an ordinary, small worker dependent on the affection of his master. The servant actually tells the wise and just master to see in him the cause of his inertia. He lies that he is afraid of a strict master, that he feels awe and that he is not able to act freely due to such a difference in abilities between the two of them.
What an attempt at manipulation! So he acknowledges the supreme abilities and personal virtues of the master and claims that because he is nowhere near such, he cannot create because he is afraid!
Usually, such workers manipulate their superiors, emphasizing their loyalty to the organization, but also personal and private problems, and trying to gain the affection of their superiors in order to cover their inefficient work. This worker did the same.
In the end, he lucidly emphasized his righteousness with the words, “I buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back. “
This worker played the role (belonging to the organization) of caring for the master’s property so that someone would not steal the talent and then honestly and carefully return what he received, did not steal, guarded others and did not allow anyone else to steal. The servant sells his story to the end.
The wise lord sees evil, hypocrisy and lies. The master knows that the servant also had certain abilities, though the least of all, but still large enough to create, and he chose not to create but to wait. The employer reprimands the worker for not creating anything, calling him “You wicked, lazy servant” because of that, and even blaming him for not at least depositing money for interest.
Why didn’t the servant deposit the money with the bank? There are three reasons why Jesus cites this example with the bank. First, because the servant is envious of the master and his earnings and perhaps this is the reason why his abilities are the least and why he could not receive more than one talent. Second, it is about banking, which is present in the same way today as in Jesus, so this example is understandable today. The third and most important reason is the risk-free investment that still exists in financial management today. Investing in time deposits and risk-free bonds are the safest way to make money today, the expected return is lower than investing in other businesses, but therefore safe!
So, if he wanted to, when he didn’t want to create, he could have invested money in money. However, the servant worked against the interests of the master. His creativity was to hide envy and laziness with lies and sell the story of how loyal and small he is and he can’t create, so he just works and takes care of his master. It shows the incredible arrogance and arrogance of many who behave in this way in their workplace and in their service.
Lucid and perfidious deception cannot pass to a just and wise master. What does the master-employer do? He commands the other servants to release this servant and to dismiss him. The biblical message is clear, this kind of behavior deserves a hell of a punishment where it is “wailing and grinding of teeth.” Thus, God does not want to listen to stories and justifications, but to the results of work and deeds that testify to faith. There is no faith without creation and without works that are the results of work regardless of the field of human creation!
